architecture - Amazinyama Tree Lodge
Raising the public buildings on legs minimises their impact on the natural environment and allows the free movement of animals to and from the water, while giving guests the experience of the forest canopy.
The use of local Makuti thatch and sustainable, lightweight timber structures creates a simple, relaxed architecture that is intended to blend with the surrounds of this World Heritage Site, as well as being comfortable for guests. The St Lucia wetland, being on the north east coast of South Africa, is part of an ancient African / Asian trade belt, which stretches all the way up the east coast of Africa. This context creates a wealth of inspiration for the architecture to draw from for detail resolution. The design makes use of natural ventilation, and no glass is used, which eliminates energy use for air-conditioning. |
